Tis’ the Season – Felt or Straw?
Some might say that the rules of the type cowboy hat you wear is similar to wearing white. The age old rule is you wear a straw hat from Easter to Labor Day and a felt hat from Labor Day to Easter. Others will tell ya, it depends on the weather.
The straw hat is the more practical choice for summer because it’s light weight and many wear them to keep cool. Though during rodeo season, you will still see a cowboy in his felt hat, especially when they get cleaned up to go out on the town or to a nice dinner.
Felt hats are better made for winter, as well as, going out on the town. Felt hats can protect you from the sun during the day and warm you right into the night. Felt hats are part of the classic cowboy style and can be both dressed up and dressed down. Nowadays, you can find felt hats made of fur or wool and a choice of many colors.
So whose the winner? Felt or Straw? Any good cowboy knows that the rules don’t always apply. Whether you let the weather decide, the occasion decide or the age old timeline… let your own preference, your own style be your guide when choosing your cowboy hat.
